Material Background

Raffia (Corypha utan) grows in parts of Southeast Asia. Leaves are renewed roughly every two years; the older leaves are collected, sun-dried for days to weeks and processed into yarns and woven goods. Raffia’s relative rarity and the careful manual processing contribute to its higher cost compared with other plant fibers. The material is valued locally for producing durable everyday items thanks to its pleasantly soft but robust fibers.
