➤ The sustainable main material: Cotton
Cotton is a natural plant fiber that thrives in tropical and subtropical regions and has been used by humans for thousands of years. For our products, we source sustainably harvested cotton from local farmers in Java. The fields are naturally fertilized, and the cotton bolls are handpicked. After ginning, the cotton is pressed into bales, combed, and spun into yarn by hand. Our cotton is skin-friendly and free of chemical processing, and therefore not suitable for tumble drying.
➤ Our production partners: Selected according to fair trade criteria
When selecting our local production partners, we emphasise fair payment, safe working conditions and reasonable working hours. We work exclusively with small family businesses that have a maximum of 20 to 30 employees. They are all experienced craftspeople of legal age. Older people in particular, who can no longer work in agriculture, benefit from jobs in handicrafts, allowing them to use the skills they have learnt from an early age to earn money and pass on traditional production methods to the younger generation. They have often told us how happy they are to be able to create something meaningful with this work and earn a good living. As all work steps are carried out by hand, the production process generates hardly any greenhouse gas emissions. We ensure all of this through regular on-site visits and ongoing personal contact with the companies.
➤ The production process: From raw material to finished throww
For our handcrafted Linggah throws, the cotton is first dyed black to achieve its signature deep hue. Skilled artisans at our production partners on the Indonesian island of Java then use traditional handlooms to weave the thick, dyed yarn into a dense, high-quality fabric, which is later sewn into throws. The distinctive zigzag pattern is meticulously hand-embroidered with white thread, and fringes are added to the sides. In total, it takes approximately four hours to create each throw.
