➤ The sustainable main material: Seagrass

The seagrass used by our production partners grows in dense meadows on the seabed in coastal areas of the Indian Ocean. The long, flexible leaves are carefully harvested by hand, cut into narrow strips, and then gently dried. This natural process gives the material its characteristic strength and durable structure, making it ideal for crafting high-quality handmade products. Thanks to its natural beauty and eco-friendliness, seagrass is the perfect choice for stylish, sustainable accessories that blend aesthetics with environmental responsibility.

➤ The production process: From raw material to finished bag

For our Salara bags, skilled artisans at our partner workshops in West Java, Indonesia, carefully weave seagrass fibres around a specially crafted wooden frame that defines the exact shape and size of the bag. The handles, also made from seagrass, are then securely stitched in place. In total, the creation of each bag takes around three hours – a process that calls for patience, precision and genuine craftsmanship.

➤ Our production partners: Selected according to fair trade criteria

When selecting our local production partners, we emphasise fair payment, safe working conditions and reasonable working hours. We work exclusively with small family businesses that have a maximum of 20 to 30 employees. They are all experienced craftspeople of legal age. Older people in particular, who can no longer work in agriculture, benefit from jobs in handicrafts, allowing them to use the skills they have learnt from an early age to earn money and pass on traditional production methods to the younger generation. They have often told us how happy they are to be able to create something meaningful with this work and earn a good living. As all work steps are carried out by hand, the production process generates hardly any greenhouse gas emissions. We ensure all of this through regular on-site visits and ongoing personal contact with the companies.
