Design & Use

JUWANA is part of a larger collection combining natural banana fibre with white cotton cords. The contrasting tones create a striking visual accent that turns each basket into an effortless focal point in any room. With three sizes, each featuring a slightly different design, JUWANA offers flexible options for decorative yet durable storage. The reinforced handles add practicality for moving laundry, plants, toys or blankets.

As each piece is individually handcrafted, slight variations in size, color and shape may occur due to manual production and the natural characteristics of the materials.

Materials & Characteristics

Main material: Banana fibre. Our baskets are crafted from plant fibres and therefore carry the natural scent and tactile feel of the material. Banana fibres are extracted from the layered trunks of cultivated banana trees. The fibres develop an intense brown hue naturally after sun-drying for about a week. The dried strips are then rolled into characteristic strands approximately 6 mm thick. Only old or dying banana trees are used for this purpose, giving these plants a second life as a dimensionally stable and robust raw material for handmade baskets at Soeji.

Production & Ethics

This basket is handmade in Java, Indonesia. When selecting local producers we prioritize fair pay and good working conditions. We work exclusively with adult, experienced artisans and avoid harmful chemicals during manufacturing. Because every production step is performed by hand, the process generates minimal greenhouse gas emissions. We maintain these standards through regular on-site visits and continuous personal contact with our partner workshops.

Care & Notes

Keep the basket dry and clean by dusting or wiping with a damp cloth. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct moisture to preserve shape and color. Natural variations are part of the product’s charm and attest to its handcrafted quality.
