Syailendra, our high-quality basket made from handcrafted banana fibre, is more than a functional container — it is a statement of natural beauty and thoughtful design. Each piece is individually crafted; slight variations in size, color and shape are natural and reflect the handmade process and the organic character of the materials.

Materials & Craft

Main material: Banana fibre. Our baskets are woven from plant fibres that retain the natural scent and feel of the material. Banana fibres come from the layered trunks of cultivated banana trees. When the fibres are sun-dried for approximately one week, they acquire an intense brown tone. Individual strips are then rolled into characteristic strands of about 6 mm thickness. Only old, dying banana trees are used, giving these plants a second life as a robust, dimensionally stable raw material for our handcrafted baskets at Soeji.

Production & Ethics

This basket is handmade in Java, Indonesia. In selecting our local producers we prioritize fair pay and good working conditions. We work only with adult, experienced artisans and avoid harmful chemicals in production. Because every step is performed by hand, the manufacturing process generates minimal greenhouse gas emissions. We validate these standards through regular on-site visits and ongoing personal contact with our partner workshops.
