Materials & sensory qualities:

Main materials: Seagrass and banana fibre. Other material: Nylon thread.

These baskets are crafted from plant fibres and therefore retain a natural, earthy scent and tactile warmth. What basket makers commonly call “seagrass” is not an aquatic plant but a small, palm-like coastal plant grown on tropical sandy beaches in Asia. Leaves are separated, cut into strips, dried, and handwoven.

Banana fibres come from the layered trunks of cultivated banana trees. When sun-dried for about a week the fibres develop an intense natural brown color. Individual strips are rolled into characteristic strands of approximately 6 mm thickness. Only old, non-productive banana trees are used, giving the material a second life as a robust, sustainable raw material for handcrafted baskets produced by Soeji.
