Detailed description

KAWAH is a longer version of our Kalima lampshade and is particularly well suited for rooms with high ceilings or for filling the space above tables. Artisans hand-weave raffia into rattan fibers, and the fringed edges form a distinct detail that spreads a warm, tropical feel throughout the room. The lampshade slightly softens the light, producing a subdued glow that creates a cozy, comfortable atmosphere when used as the primary light source.

The lampshade includes a ring for securing a bulb holder. It is supplied without additional accessories, so please purchase a suitable bulb and cable separately. Any standard hardware store will carry compatible items.

Materials and origin

Main material: Raffia (Corypha utan). Other materials: metal frame.

Our lampshades are crafted from plant fibers, giving them a natural scent and tactile quality. Raffia grows naturally across steppe and forest regions of Southeast Asia. Every two years the plant renews its leaves and sheds the older ones; these leaves are collected, sun-dried for days to weeks depending on the desired coloration, and then processed by hand into wickerwork. The relative rarity of raffia and the intensive hand-processing increase its cost compared to other plant fibers. While raffia is less familiar in Europe, it has long been used by local communities in Southeast Asia for everyday objects because of its pleasant softness and robust durability.
