- Seagrass: The material commonly called “seagrass” by basket makers is a small, palm-like coastal plant found on sandy tropical beaches in Asia. Leaves are harvested, cut into strips, dried and woven by hand.
- Banana fibre: Fibres come from the layered trunks of banana trees used in agriculture. The deep brown colour appears naturally after sun-drying for about a week. The dried strips are rolled into the characteristic ~6 mm-thick strands. Only old, dying banana trees are used, giving the plants a second life as a stable, robust raw material.
Craftsmanship and production:
- Handmade in Java, Indonesia.
- We select local producers who provide fair pay and good working conditions. Only adult, experienced artisans work in the production facilities we source from.
- No harmful chemicals are used in manufacturing. Because all steps are hand-executed, the production process generates minimal greenhouse gas emissions.
- Slight variations in size, colour and shape are normal and to be expected, as each piece is individually handcrafted and materials are natural.
