About the material — Banana Fibre

Banana fibre is sourced from the layered trunks of cultivated banana trees. Only mature, dying banana trees are used, giving these plants a second life as a stable, sustainable raw material for handcrafted baskets. The natural brown tone develops when the fibres are sun-dried for about a week, and the strips are then rolled into characteristic strands approximately 6 mm thick. The result is a tactile, natural-feeling product with an earthy scent and organic appearance.

Handcraft and slight variations

Each LAWU basket is an individually crafted piece. Slight variations in size, color and shape may occur due to the handmade nature of the product and natural differences in the raw materials. These subtle differences make every basket unique.

Production and sustainability

The LAWU basket is handmade in Java, Indonesia. We select local producers who provide fair pay and safe working conditions. Only experienced adult artisans are involved in production, and no harmful chemicals are used. Because all production steps are performed by hand, greenhouse gas emissions are minimal. We maintain these standards through regular on-site visits and ongoing personal contact with our partner workshops.
