Design and functionality

The GUMA wall basket has a shallow, plate-like shape that makes it an elegant wall accent and a practical tabletop bowl. Our wall decor is made from plant fibers and retains the scent and tactile qualities of natural materials. Banana fiber is sourced from the layered trunks of agricultural banana trees. The fibers develop an intense brown tone naturally when dried in the sun for about a week. Individual strips are then rolled into characteristic strands roughly 6 mm thick. Only old, dying banana trees are used, giving these plants a second life as a dimensionally stable and robust material for handmade baskets created by Soeji artisans.

Production and ethics

This wall decor is handmade in Java, Indonesia. We carefully select local producers who provide fair pay and good working conditions. Only adult, experienced artisans work in the workshops where our goods are made. No harmful chemicals are used in production. Because each step is done by hand, the manufacturing process produces very little greenhouse gas emissions. We maintain these standards through regular site visits and ongoing personal contact with our partner companies.

Care and storage

Keep the basket dry and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight to preserve color and fibers. Gently dust with a soft brush or cloth. These items are decorative; avoid placing heavy or sharp objects inside that could deform the structure.
