The CARUBAN placemat impresses with an unusual spoke-like design that adds an airy, relaxed accent to any table setting. Its water hyacinth fibers are hand-woven around a sturdy metal ring, combining an organic look with reliable dimensional stability. Materials & Scent

Material: Water hyacinth. Our placemats are crafted from natural plant fibers and therefore carry the subtle, natural scent and tactile warmth of handmade wickerwork. The fibers are sun-dried and woven by experienced artisans.

About the raw material

Water hyacinth is a tropical aquatic plant originally from South America and widely established in Southeast Asia. Because it proliferates rapidly and can blanket water surfaces, it is regularly harvested to restore waterways. Leaves are removed and the thick stems are sun-dried for three to seven days before being processed. This creates an abundant, sustainable raw material ideal for wicker and woven products.

Production & Ethics

This placemat is handmade in Java, Indonesia. We select local producers who provide fair pay and safe working conditions. Only experienced adult artisans work in the partner workshops, and no harmful chemicals are used during production. Because each step is performed by hand, the manufacturing process generates minimal greenhouse gas emissions. We maintain these standards through regular on-site visits and continuous personal contact with our partner companies.

Care & Use

Use on dining tables, side tables, or as a decorative underlay for centerpieces. Wipe clean with a damp cloth; avoid prolonged exposure to direct moisture to preserve shape and finish. Store flat when not in use to maintain the form of the metal frame and woven fibers.
