Materials & Craftsmanship

Main material: banana fibre. Secondary materials: cotton, nylon thread.

The baskets are woven from plant fibres and retain a natural scent and texture. Banana fibre is sourced from the layered trunks of banana trees used in agriculture. After harvesting, the fibres naturally darken when dried in the sun for about a week. The dried strips are then rolled into characteristic strands approximately 6 mm thick. Only old, dying banana trees are used, giving these plants a second life as a robust, dimensional material for long-lasting handcrafted baskets.

The GARIAU basket is handmade in Java, Indonesia by experienced artisans. We prioritize fair pay, safe working conditions and adult, skilled craftsmanship. No harmful chemicals are used during production. Because each step is done by hand, the manufacturing process generates minimal greenhouse gas emissions.
