Leaves are collected, sun-dried for several days to weeks and then woven by skilled artisans. Raffia is valued for its pleasantly soft feel combined with robust durability; it is more labor-intensive to produce than many other plant fibers, which contributes to its distinctive quality.
Craftsmanship and sustainability
Each Ambon placemat is an individually handcrafted piece produced in Java, Indonesia. We partner with local producers who provide fair pay and safe working conditions; only adult, experienced artisans are employed. No harmful chemicals are used during production. Because every step is performed by hand, the manufacturing process generates minimal greenhouse gas emissions. Slight variations in size, color and shape are natural and expected due to manual production and the organic nature of the material—this adds to each piece’s unique character.
Care and use
Ideal for dining tables, side tables or as wall décor. Clean gently with a dry or slightly damp cloth; avoid prolonged exposure to moisture or direct, intense sunlight to preserve color and shape. Due to the natural fiber, a subtle, pleasant plant scent may be present.
