Material & Origin

Raffia (Corypha utan) grows in steppe and forest regions of Southeast Asia. Leaves are renewed approximately every two years; the harvested leaves are sun-dried for days to weeks and then processed into wickerwork according to the desired shade. Raffia is valued for its pleasantly soft yet robust character. Because of the manual harvesting and processing, raffia products are less common and higher in cost compared with other plant fibers, but they are widely used and appreciated in local Southeast Asian communities.

Each URUP placemat is an individual handmade piece. Slight variations in size, color, and shape may occur due to manual production and natural material differences. These characteristics are part of the product’s authenticity and charm. To preserve the placemat, avoid prolonged exposure to heavy moisture; clean by gently wiping with a dry or slightly damp cloth.
