Detailed description

The SEWU rug is carefully woven by experienced artisans who specialise in plant fibres. The seagrass provides a pleasantly firm, natural feel underfoot and introduces warm earth tones into your home. Four contrasting coloured stripes create a subtle, minimalist pattern that enhances interiors without drawing undue attention.

Compact yet robust, the rug can serve as a distinctive doormat in front of broad entrance doors or as an accent piece in a hallway, living room or study. Its coarse texture helps trap dirt, while the neutral palette integrates easily with a wide range of furnishing styles.

Materials & origin

What is commonly called "seagrass" in basketry is not a true marine plant but a palm-like coastal plant found on tropical Asian beaches. Leaves are harvested, cut into strips, dried and handwoven. The SEWU carpet combines these natural seagrass fibres with recycled plastic to reinforce durability where needed. As a plant-fibre product, the rug has a natural scent and organic hand-feel.

Ethical production & care

This rug is handmade in Java, Indonesia. We select local producers who provide fair pay and good working conditions. All manufacturing steps are performed by adult, experienced artisans without the use of harmful chemicals. Because the production is largely manual, the process generates minimal greenhouse gas emissions. We maintain these standards through regular on-site visits and ongoing personal contact with our partner workshops.

Use & maintenance tips

• Suitable for low to medium traffic areas; can be used as an indoor doormat for wide entrances.
• Shake out or vacuum (use a brushless attachment) to remove dirt. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct moisture.
• Rotate periodically to ensure even wear. Spot clean with a damp cloth; do not machine wash.
