Each cushion is 100% handmade using traditional knotting-needle techniques. Dried raffia fibers (Raffia, Corypha utan) are skillfully woven to produce the cushion's distinctive texture and depth. The natural variation in the plant fibers and handcrafting process means every piece is unique and may differ slightly in color, size, and shape.

Filling & feel: TARAKAN is filled with a blend of cotton and coconut fibers that maintain the cushion’s round, plump shape over time while providing a natural, breathable feel. The plant-fiber construction gives the cushion a subtle, earthy scent and a pleasant tactile quality.

Material background: Raffia is harvested from the leaves of Corypha utan in Southeast Asia. Leaves are collected, sun-dried for days to weeks, and processed according to the desired shade and finish. Raffia’s soft yet robust character makes it ideal for artisanal home goods. Due to the manual processing and relative scarcity, raffia products can be more costly than other plant-fiber items, but they offer durability and a distinct natural aesthetic.

Production & ethics: This cushion is handmade in Java, Indonesia. We select local producers who receive fair pay and work under safe conditions. All artisans are adults and experienced in traditional techniques. No harmful chemicals are used during production, and the handcrafting process keeps greenhouse gas emissions minimal. We verify these standards through regular on-site visits and ongoing personal contact with our partner producers.
